Myoo-in temple is the only Koya-san Shingon-shu Sect temple in Minamiboso. In the precinct is a 100-year-old short version of the Shikoku 88 pilgrimage trail. On the 15-minute trail through a bamboo forest, 88 stone statues await you. A large tree in front of the main hall is a very rare ginko tree whose leaves bear nuts on them. A sacred fire has been lit in the hall, and it is from the “eternal fire” in Mt. Koya in Wakayama Prefecture. Another building, the hall of the Medicine Buddha, survived the air raids during the World War II. On the fourth Sunday of every May, the temple is crowded with visitors keen to see the well-known Fire-walking ceremony.
