No one has a sure count of all of Tateyama’s matsuri festivals, but they number roughly 100. Not a week goes by, from late March through October, without at least one festival somewhere in Tateyama.

Come to Mera’s festival for two reasons:
it is macho itself;
and it is entirely local.

Tateyama Matsuri is sprawling and kaleidoscopic. You will want to be everywhere at once. 13 districts, with their 8 shrines and 15 gods, parade 7 mikoshi and 6 floats up and down their own neighborhoods and in and around Tateyama Shrine.

August 8, ~7:30-8:45 p.m., Hojo Beach near Tateyama Station. (Rain date: August 9 or August 10)
10,000 fireworks, in almost as many variations and combinations, fill the sky in a “starmine”-style continuous display.

August 20-22. Sunosaki Shrine.
The staircase is narrow, and the bearers few. They wear white pantaloons and long white tunics, and broad orange sashes with golden chrysanthemum crests that glitter in the sunlight.
